Michael Butler1,2

b. 1 November 1849, d. 4 January 1939
Michael Butler, son of Michael Butler and Ellen Smith, was born on 1 November 1849 at Ile des Allumettes, Quebec,3 and baptized on 14 November 1849 at St. Columbkille, Pembroke, Ontario.3

It is not clear how Michael met Sarah Thomlinson. In the 1871 census Sarah is found living with her widowed mother in Grattan township, Renfrew County. Michael has not been found in the 1871 census, so it is possible that he was in Grattan or somewhere nearby. However, at the time of their marriage in 1876, Michael's residence is Allumette Island, and Sarah's is Grattan.4

Michael married Sarah Thomlinson, daughter of William Thomlinson and Mary Walsh, on 26 November 1876 at Renfrew, Ontario.4

On 26 November 1877 Michael was granted a location ticket under the Free Grants and Homestead Act of 1868 for lot 7, concession 1, Grattan Township, Renfrew County, a 100 acre lot.5Under the Act the locatee was responsible for improving the land to a certain degree, by clearing trees, planting crops, etc. It appears that Michael had difficulty meeting these obligations for on 5 December 1878 Michael's location was cancelled by an Order in Council.6

It may be that the loss of Michael's location was more the fault of the land itself than any lack of effort or skill on Michael's part for on 12 June 1879 he received a second location ticket under the same Act for lots 10 and 11, concession 2, Grattan Township, a total of 197 acres. Michael was more successful with this land and was granted a patent on 19 Aug 1891 for both lots.7

On 5 May 1897 Michael and Sarah sold their land in Grattan and moved to Sudbury. It is likely that they heard of the booming mining community and decided to make a living at something less difficult than farming.8

Michael ran a livery barn in sudbury near the Balmoral Hotel. Michael and Sarah also ran a restaurant on Elm St. East between Durham and Lisgar streets.1

Michael was an expert horseman and won many races on saddle, harness and ice cutters. He also trained many other winning racers in the sport.1

Michael married Rose Mennard on 14 June 1916 at Sudbury, Ontario.9

Michael married Ostivie Frandimel on 20 July 1923 at Sudbury, Ontario.10

In 1938 Michael's health began to fail so in May he moved to Westree, Ontario to live with his son, Arthur. In late December Michael became seriously ill and was being brought to St. Joseph's Hospital1 on CNR train #4. Michael died as the train sped between Hanmer & Capreol. Michael Butler was 89 years old.1

Michael Butler's obituary from the Sudbury Star. The story of living with an Ojibway tribe is most likely a tall tale.
