Phoebe Stoner

b. circa 1806, d. 22 July 1881
Phoebe Stoner, daughter of John Stoner and Sarah Gibson, was born circa 1806 at Cowfold, Sussex, England.

In 1824 Phoebe began to work for Lady Fletcher in the dairy and bakery at her home in Walton-on-Thames. Phoebe was living with her parents in Nuthurst, Sussex at the time. She was recommended to Lady Fletcher by Thomas Charles Medwin, a lawyer from nearby Horsham, Sussex. Phoebe moved to servants' quarters at Lady Fletchers home.

Lady Fletcher was very pleased with Phoebe's manners and work ethic and wrote to Mr. Medwin to thank him for his recommendation.

In October 1825, Phoebe left Lady Fletcher's house to live in Hampton. She was three months pregnant with the child of Lady Fletcher's coachman, William. He had arranged for the room in Hampton, fearing that Phoebe's pregnancy might jeapordize his job. Lady Fletcher found Phoebe and helped her as much as she could.

William did not do anything to support Phoebe and did not intend to support her child either. When Lady Fletcher discovered this, she let him go.1

Phoebe gave birth to her son, George, on 16 April 1826 at the workhouse in Walton-on-Thames.

Phoebe and George were in a difficult situation. Attitudes at the time were very unforgiving of unwed mothers and their children. It is unknown when Phoebe met James White, but less than a year after George was born2 Phoebe and James were married on 4 February 1827 at Walton-on-Thames.3

In 1832 Phoebe and James left Hersham with their three young children bound for Canada. They settled in Oxford Township, Grenville, Ontario. They had six more children over the next several years.4

At some time between 1845 and 1847, James and Phoebe moved from the Kemptville area to Westmeath Township, Renfrew County, perhaps because land was more plentiful there. They settled on lot 9 in concession 7 East of Muskrat Lake. Two more children were born here. James farmed on that land until the late 1870s.5

Phoebe died on 22 July 1881 at Westmeath Township, Renfrew County, Ontario.6
