Hanusia Zwarych

b. circa 1897
Hanusia Zwarych, a.k.a. Annie Svarich, daughter of Iwan Zwarych and Maria Dolyniuk, was born circa 1897 at Tulova, Ukraine.1

Hanusia, her parents and siblings, and several other families left Ukraine to settle in Canada, sailing from Hamburg, Germany, on 4 April 1900 on the S. S. Arcadia2 arriving at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 18 April 1900. For more details of the journey from Tulova to Alberta, see the Zwarycz and Kostaszczuk Emigration.3

Annie attended elementary school at Kolomea School not far from her parent's farm, and public school at Vegreville.

In 1913, Annie's father hired a new young immigrant from the village of Wydiniw, which was also in the county of Sniatyn where Tulova is located, to work on the farm. This young man's name was Sam Gregory.1 Within two years of meeting, Annie and Sam were married. They moved to a farm only a couple of miles away from Annie's parents' farm in the district of Sich-Kolomea.

Annie and Sam were very involved in the cultural life of their community, particularly in their involvement with the local Ukrainian Orhtodox church. Annie and Sam were also both involved in the staging of plays and other public concerts.1

Annie and Sam sold their farm to thier son, Bob, in 1950 and moved to Edmonton to begin their retirement.

Sam died in 1967. Annie continued to live in Edmonton and remained an active member of St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox church. Even well into her 70s Annie would manage the cooking for large community gatherings that would often have hundreds in attendance.1
