Haffia Zwarych

b. circa 1892
Haffia Zwarych, daughter of Iwan Zwarych and Maria Dolyniuk, was born circa 1892 at Tulova, Ukraine.

Haffia, her parents and siblings, and several other families left Ukraine to settle in Canada, sailing from Hamburg, Germany, on 4 April 1900 on the S. S. Arcadia1 arriving at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 18 April 1900. For more details of the journey from Tulova to Alberta, see the Zwarycz and Kostaszczuk Emigration.2

Haffia did not have a formal education since there were no schools available nearby. However, she was able to teach herself how to read and write in Ukrainian and in English.3

Haffia married Joseph Janishewsky in June 1910.

In 1912 Joseph and Haffia sold their farm and moved to Edmonton. They were charter members with St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Church and became honorary members in 1963.
