George Jago

b. 2 January 1882, d. 1956
George Jago, son of Charles Augustus John Petherick Jago and Emiline Matilda Kneebone, was born on 2 January 1882 at Yealm, Devon.1 He was baptized on 14 May 1884 at Pendeen, Cornwall, England.2

George's father served in the Royal Navy and the Coastguard, so the family moved around a great deal as he was transferred from one Coastguard station to another. They moved from Devon to several ports in Cornwall, such as Pendeen and Penzance, and also to Ireland. The family eventually moved back to Devonport.3

At age 16 George followed in his father's footsteps and signed on with the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 10 March 1898. George began his service attached to HMS Impregnable.1

George served aboard several ships over the next few years and rose through the ranks, finally becoming a Leading Seaman on 25 October 1905 while serving aboard HMS Vivid I.1

George continued to serve throughout World War I and into peacetime. George finally retired from the Navy on 1 January 1922 after almost 24 years of service.1

After retiring from the Navy George returned to Devonport, Devon to live with his father and his sister, Emeline.4

George died in 1956 at Plymouth, Devon.
